5 literary passages to celebrate summer 2015

To salute the new season, here are five great passages about summer from writers past and present.

1. Shirley Jackson, “Autobiograohical Musings.”

“I regard the shiny new mess kit that my son has just gotten for camp and recall, suddenly, long hot weeks and bluejays and the unmistakeable smell of a canvas sleeping bag, but I would not otherwise ever remember that I, too, went to camp. So much is happening right now, and the present goes by so imperceptibly; summers are shorter than they used to be, but it is pleasant to reflect that no one, any longer, is in a position to insist that I learn to swim."
