Debut writer Swyler's book tells the story of the Watson family, members of which have worked as "mermaids" in carnivals (women who can hold their breath for a long period of time). But many of these "mermaids" have drowned. Librarian Simon Watson, whose mother was a "mermaid," finds a journal of a circus owner living in the 18th century. "It's a mystery, it's a story of sisters," says Nelson. "Really interesting and unusual."
