In the first decade of the 20th century, a remarkable genius cluster formed in a dilapidated hillside neighborhood of northern Paris 鈥 Montmartre. Only Picasso and Matisse make it into the book's subtitle but also included are Andr茅 Derain, Maurice de Vlaminck, Georges Braque, Amedeo Modigliani, Constantin Brancusi, and Gertrude Stein. Art historian Sue Roe doesn鈥檛 bring very much that鈥檚 new to this party, but she does unfold her story 鈥 one of the most remarkable in the history of contemporary culture 鈥 in prose that is both energetic and insightful.
