2. 'California,' by Edan Lepucki

Edan Lepucki's debut novel centers on Cal and Frida, a couple who departed a ruined Los Angeles after a disaster and now live in isolation in the forest. They are forced to confront a decision about how they want to live when Frida becomes pregnant. "It raises all kinds of questions that come up whether you believe there's an apocalypse or not, [like] how ... you prepare for a new life," Nelson says of the novel.
