"The New Victorians" writer Denfeld centers her novel on two characters. One is a death row prisoner who believes his jail is magical. He describes tiny men who live in the walls and says the walls make noise. Meanwhile, an investigator is examining the life of another prisoner to see if he can be taken off death row. "[The first prisoner] may not be a reliable narrator, but [he's] certainly an imaginative one," Nelson says of the character.
