7. 'The Favorite Daughter,' by Allen Say

The book by award-winning children鈥檚 author Allen Say offers gentle commentary on how it feels to be a slightly different child in a world that calls for conformity. Say (who is himself the child of a Japanese-American mother and a Korean father) tells the story of Yuriko, a half-Japanese girl who comes in for some teasing when her American teacher calls her 鈥淓ureka.鈥 But thanks to some loving coaching from her artist father, Yuriko learns that being different is a miracle in itself.
