Michel de Montaigne: 15 pithy quotes on his birthday

French Renaissance writer Michel de Montaigne is sometimes credited with being the father of the essay, as well as a philosopher who has influenced thinkers from Friedrich Nietzsche to Isaac Asimov. But the author-statesman was also a gifted practitioner of the art of the aphorism. Here, to mark his 480th birthday, are 15 of Montaigne's enduring witticisms, as collected by James Geary in "Geary's Guide to the World's Great Aphorisms."
