When Heimbuch took an education class on gun safety, his instructor punctuated safety instructions with many dire warnings. "The terror-by-example method of teaching has been highly effective with me ever since an elementary school art teacher warned me that mishandling the drying racks would result in our eyes being 'turned into hamburger,'" he wrote. "So I made a note to always check my gun barrel after crossing a fence line and underlined it in my notebook three times."
