Before Bush proposed the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, John said he had not been a fan of the president's. However, he was pleasantly surprised by PEPFAR and a meeting he had with Bush at a concert after John was honored at the Kennedy Center. "He was warm, charming, and very complimentary, not only about my music but also about the work of my foundation," John wrote. "He knew all about what we were doing, and he was endlessly knowledgeable about HIV/AIDS as well... my encounter with George W. Bush reminded me not to rush to judgment about people, especially when it comes to fighting AIDS."
