By Tage Olsin

When one of Grant's sons was five years old, Grant signed him up to play for a town team and was told that there weren't enough managers. The baseball commissioner asked her if there was any way she could take that on. What did she know about baseball? Not much. But Grant accepted and studied up, and she says that (although she never did it again), that season went fine. "Being a parent means trying on new (baseball) hats from time to time," Grant writes. "It means taking on risks and finding yourself in unfamiliar situations. It means doing what you can so your child can be on a baseball team, even if that means coaching a sport about which you know very little."
