Lenny Montana was cast as Luca Brasi in the film after producer Al Ruddy saw him serving as a bodyguard to a reputed Mob member. Montana was not trained as an actor, and his difficulty remembering lines inspired the scene in which Brasi tries to remember a speech he wants to make to Vito Corleone, thanking him for inviting him to the wedding. Brasi paces back and forth nervously, just as Montana did when he forgot his dialogue.
