In order to get the blocking right, Coppola had actress Talia Shire (who is also his sister) and his own son, who was 9 years old at the time, rehearse the fight between Shire's character Connie and her abusive husband. (The actor who portrayed him, Gianni Russo, had gotten so into the scene during his screen test that he had frightened his scene partner.) When it came time to film, Coppola said he had a hard time directing a scene in which his real-life sister was the subject of spousal abuse.
