When an audience member asked McCullough to list 鈥渢hree books everyone should read,鈥 the author hesitated. 鈥淚t鈥檚 an impossible question.鈥
After a moment of deliberation, he declared Michael Shaara鈥檚 Gettysburg story 鈥淭he Killer Angels,鈥 鈥渁 good biography of George Washington鈥 (perhaps Ron Chernow鈥檚 鈥淲ashington: A Life" or 鈥淗is Excellency: George Washington鈥 by Joseph Ellis would fit the bill), and 鈥淭ender Is The Night鈥 by F. Scott Fitzgerald as his impromptu top three.
The books reflect 鈥渋mportant people and times to know about,鈥 said the author. Of course, he added, everyone should read his books too.
