McCullough mentioned Michael Shaara's outstanding Civil War novel "The Killer Angels" as a book everyone should read.

When an audience member asked McCullough to list 鈥渢hree books everyone should read,鈥� the author hesitated. 鈥淚t鈥檚 an impossible question.鈥�

After a moment of deliberation, he declared Michael Shaara鈥檚 Gettysburg story 鈥淭he Killer Angels,鈥� 鈥渁 good biography of George Washington鈥� (perhaps Ron Chernow鈥檚 鈥淲ashington: A Life" or 鈥淗is Excellency: George Washington鈥� by Joseph Ellis would fit the bill), and 鈥淭ender Is The Night鈥� by F. Scott Fitzgerald as his impromptu top three.

The books reflect 鈥渋mportant people and times to know about,鈥� said the author. Of course, he added, everyone should read his books too.
