Hayao Miyazaki's 2001 movie tells the story of Chihiro Ogino, a small girl who is going with her family to their new house when she and her other family members stumble into another world. When Chihiro wanders off, she returns to find that her parents have been turned into pigs and she must discover how to escape from the magical world in which she is trapped.
said he wanted to create a movie for young girls and that he believed Japan only "offered such things as crushes and romance to 10-year-old girls."
The film won the 2002 Best Animated Feature Oscar and is still the only movie from Japan to have done so since the prize began in 2001.
