Two New York City police officers who fatally shot a teenage boy who they said pointed a gun at them have been placed on administrative duty.

Police say Kimani聽Gray was with a group of other males in Brooklyn Saturday night. Police say 16-year-old left when he saw police in an unmarked red car. Authorities say the boy was acting suspiciously. The undercover officers identified themselves as they approached him.

According to police, the boy then pointed a .38-caliber revolver at the officers who responded by firing 11 shots, striking him several times. Gray was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital.

Police say Gray's revolver was loaded with four live rounds.

The New York Post reports that Gray had a rap sheet that included charges of grand larceny and inciting a riot, police sources said. The Post also reported that Gray's friends say the cops opened fire, and聽 鈥渉e was screaming, 鈥楽top! I鈥檓 not running,!鈥 鈥 said pal Devonte Brown, 16.

Neighbors confirmed a rapid succession of gunfire booming through the area. 鈥淚 heard a lot of shots, rapid fire, about eight shots,鈥 said one resident. 鈥淚 heard the gun shots from my living room.鈥

WPIX-TV quotes another witness, Camille Johnson: 鈥淗e was running for his life, telling the cops, 鈥淪top,鈥 She adds: 鈥漈hey really are, seriously, walking around, shooting little kids.鈥

The officers were listed in stable condition after treatment for trauma and tinnitus. The NYPD did not release their names.
