A college degree is one of the best tickets for climbing the economic ladder. Yet at many schools, low-income students graduate at a rate much lower than that of their wealthier peers.

Nothing is inevitable about such uneven outcomes. There are examples of colleges and universities where low-income students attend in large numbers and reach the finish line just as often as everybody else.

“Committing to supporting low-income college students fundamentally transforms their life opportunities and our communities,” said new US Secretary of Education John King Wednesday in a press call unveiling a report on college success for economically disadvantaged students.

Less than 10 percent of American four-year colleges and universities have at least 40 percent of their students receiving federal Pell grants and also see more than half of those low-income students graduating within six years, Secretary King noted. “Unfortunately today those success stories are the exceptions, but they ought to be rule,” he said.

But education leaders are increasingly looking for lessons from such campuses. Here are a few schools whose efforts are paying off.
