A college degree is one of the best tickets for climbing the economic ladder. Yet at many schools, low-income students graduate at a rate much lower than that of their wealthier peers.
Nothing is inevitable about such uneven outcomes. There are examples of colleges and universities where low-income students attend in large numbers and reach the finish line just as often as everybody else.
鈥淐ommitting to supporting low-income college students fundamentally transforms their life opportunities and our communities,鈥� said new US Secretary of Education John King Wednesday in a press call unveiling a report on college success for economically disadvantaged students.
Less than 10 percent of American four-year colleges and universities have at least 40 percent of their students receiving federal Pell grants and also see more than half of those low-income students graduating within six years, Secretary King noted. 鈥淯nfortunately today those success stories are the exceptions, but they ought to be rule,鈥� he said.
But education leaders are increasingly looking for lessons from such campuses. Here are a few schools whose efforts are paying off.
