Watch these shows to get smarter about everything from equality to mollusks

Among these Netflix offerings are two documentaries shortlisted for Oscars:聽鈥淐rip Camp鈥 and聽鈥淢y Octopus Teacher.鈥澛

For those looking to expand their horizons about equal rights 鈥 and ocean doings 鈥 consider these three options, all on Netflix. Both 鈥淐rip Camp鈥 and 鈥淢y Octopus Teacher鈥 have been shortlisted for Oscars in 2021.聽

鈥淎mend鈥 takes on equality

What does it mean to be a citizen of the United States? That鈥檚 the complicated question 19th-century lawmakers sought to answer with the 14th Amendment. Narrated by Will Smith and grounded in interviews with historians and legal experts, 鈥淎mend: The Fight for America鈥 is a star-studded, six-part series that explains the 14th Amendment鈥檚 history and its present-day significance. Beautifully produced, 鈥淎mend,鈥 is a must-watch for adults and older teens interested in the ongoing fight for equal rights. (TV-MA)

Disability activism grew here

Joyful and triumphant, 鈥淐rip Camp: A Disability Revolution,鈥 documents how an experimental 1970s summer camp for disabled teens produced several influential leaders in the disability rights movement. 鈥淚n some way, even when we were that young, we knew we were all being sidelined,鈥 says activist and former camp counselor Judy Heumann in one interview. 鈥淲e didn鈥檛 want to sideline anybody.鈥 It鈥檚 an important reminder of what鈥檚 at stake in debates about accessibility. (Rated R for some language, including sexual references.)

Can this Mollusk teach you?

Inspired by master wildlife trackers, filmmaker Craig Foster brings his camera to the same patch of South African kelp forest every day for a year to follow a charismatic octopus in the slow but engaging 鈥淢y Octopus Teacher.鈥 Although I watched parts of the show through my fingers 鈥 there are many dangers lurking in the kelp 鈥 I came away marveling at the idea that curiosity, family, and gentleness may be values we share with mollusks.
