The TV movie 鈥淒olly Parton鈥檚 Christmas Of Many Colors: Circle of Love鈥 premieres on NBC on Nov. 30 and is a follow-up to the 2015 program 鈥淒olly Parton鈥檚 Coat of Many Colors,鈥 which premiered around the same time in 2015.聽
鈥淐oat,鈥 which was based on Parton鈥檚 childhood, became a ratings hit, ranking as the most-viewed original movie on a broadcast network in over four years.
What brought so many viewers to 鈥淐oat鈥 and will 鈥淐hristmas Of Many Colors: Circle of Love鈥 match that when it airs tonight?聽
USA Today writer Robert Bianco believes that for some, the appeal of the first movie was Parton鈥檚 name being attached to it and the religious themes, and he thinks that will apply to the second movie as well.聽
鈥淟ike the first movie, it鈥檚 sure to be popular,鈥 Mr. Bianco wrote of the new movie. 鈥淧arton鈥檚 well-earned fan base, and the film鈥檚 explicitly religious message 鈥 a rarity among holiday movies, which tend to be more secular or fantasy-driven 鈥 will see to that.鈥澛
However, Tony Maglio of TheWrap believes that the first movie succeeded in part last year because it didn鈥檛 have a lot of competition on broadcast television.
鈥淭V follow-ups rarely do as well as the originals,鈥 Mr. Maglio wrote. 鈥溾楥ircle of Love鈥 is battling history. But worse than that, it鈥檚 battling 鈥楨mpire.鈥 Last year, 鈥楥oat鈥 faced off against modest competition, including the 鈥楤ones鈥 season finale on Fox, some CBS sitcoms, and 鈥楾oy Story鈥 on ABC 鈥 The 鈥楥oat鈥 sequel does have one advantage: Its lead-in is the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree.鈥
