'Daredevil' renewed, 'Defenders' date 鈥 where Marvel's Netflix series stand

Netflix continues its plans for multiple Marvel TV series, as the TV network revealed new clips and information about upcoming series 鈥淟uke Cage,鈥 鈥淚ron Fist,鈥 and 鈥淭he Defenders鈥 at this year鈥檚 Comic-Con event.聽

Netflix has already released two seasons of the program 鈥淒aredevil,鈥 which centers on a blind lawyer who has superpowers and fights crime, and one of 鈥淛essica Jones,鈥 which is about a private investigator who is also unusually gifted.聽

The character of Luke Cage (Mike Colter) was introduced in the 鈥淛essica鈥 series. Now he鈥檒l star on his own show, with the program debuting Sept. 30.聽

鈥淭he world is ready for a bulletproof black man,鈥 鈥淐age鈥 executive producer Cheo Coker said during Comic-Con, seemingly referring to recent incidents involving police brutality against African-Americans.聽

At the Comic-Con presentation, those behind the shows, including Jeph Loeb of Marvel, revealed that 鈥淒aredevil鈥 will be back for a third series of episodes.聽

Meanwhile, 鈥淚ron Fist,鈥 which stars Finn Jones of 鈥淕ame of Thrones,鈥 will debut in 2017. The year will also see the miniseries 鈥淒efenders鈥 appear online, when Matt Murdock of 鈥淒aredevil,鈥 Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist will all join forces.聽

While Netflix has aired plenty of original programming by this point, with other shows including 鈥淗ouse of Cards,鈥 鈥淯nbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,鈥 and 鈥淥range Is the New Black,鈥 these programs are unusual in that they are all Netflix originals and are connected to one another. For example, Netflix鈥檚 鈥淔uller House鈥 and 鈥淎rrested Development鈥 are continuations of shows at other networks, but shows like 鈥淛essica Jones鈥 and 鈥淟uke Cage鈥 are different in that they are spin-offs of one another.聽

However, this model reflects Marvel鈥檚 strategy. The ultra-successful films released by the studio are part of a 鈥渃inematic universe,鈥 with characters popping up in one another鈥檚 films. 鈥淭he Defenders鈥 is akin to the Marvel movie 鈥淭he Avengers,鈥 which brought together characters such as Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Widow.
