As the Emmys approach,听Netflix鈥檚 鈥淯nbreakable Kimmy Schmidt鈥 and 鈥淗ouse of Cards鈥 have scored nominations in lead categories. No surprise, right? It鈥檚 easy to forget just how quickly Netflix has grown from being just a movie rental house to also producing original content since 鈥淗ouse of Cards鈥 debuted in 2013. Its string of hits has proved it鈥檚 a creative powerhouse 鈥 and placed it firmly on the list of go-to places for acclaimed programming.听
So how do viewers separate the good from the not-so-great when it seems as if every streaming service and cable channel is rolling out original shows? Here鈥檚 a quick overview of some of the cable and satellite networks and on-demand services that have turned out recent hits. Check them out and decide for yourself:
Amazon: Its show 鈥淭ransparent,鈥 starring Jeffrey Tambor, became a critical hit when it debuted in 2014. It鈥檚 now nominated for the prestigious Best Comedy Series Emmy Award and Tambor is nominated for Best Lead Actor in a Comedy. Amazon鈥檚 series 鈥淏osch鈥 and 鈥淢ozart in the Jungle鈥 have also scored well with critics.
Starz: The cable channel鈥檚 shows 鈥淏lack Sails鈥 and 鈥淒a Vinci鈥檚 Demons鈥 weren鈥檛 popular with reviewers, but the network hit it big with 鈥淥utlander,鈥 the Scottish historical drama that debuted in 2014. An upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman鈥檚 classic fantasy novel 鈥淎merican Gods鈥 shows the network is investing in promising projects.
IFC: The network got the public鈥檚 attention with the TV show 鈥淧ortlandia.鈥 Its new show 鈥淒ocumentary Now!,鈥 which parodies the documentary format, is receiving good reviews.
Hulu: The streaming service recently saved the well-reviewed Mindy Kaling sitcom 鈥淭he Mindy Project鈥 after Fox canceled it. The new season begins Sept. 15. Hulu has also signed on to adapt Stephen King鈥檚 popular time-travel novel 鈥11/22/63.鈥澨
