The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization behind the Golden Globe Awards, has selected films including 鈥淟a La Land鈥� and 鈥淢oonlight鈥� for multiple nominations, possibly cementing the films鈥� statuses as frontrunners in the ongoing Oscars season.

The musical movie 鈥淟a La Land,鈥� which stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, received multiple nominations for the Golden Globes, including best comedy or musical, best actress in a comedy or musical (Ms. Stone), best actor in a comedy or musical (Mr. Gosling), and best director.听

Meanwhile, 鈥淢oonlight鈥� was nominated for best drama, 鈥淢oonlight鈥� actor Mahershala Ali was nominated for best supporting actor, Naomie Harris was nominated for best supporting actress, and Barry Jenkins was nominated for best director.听

Some industry watchers are seeing the Golden Globe nominations as the latest sign that 鈥淟a鈥� and 鈥淢oonlight鈥� will be two of the movies to watch as the Oscars season continues. (Oscar nominations will be announced on Jan. 24.)听

Variety's Kristopher Tapley wrote that those who want to know what will succeed at the Oscars should pay attention to the Golden Globe nominations, writing, 鈥淲hat the Globes unambiguously provide 鈥� is the single greatest signal boost of the awards season. The marketing potential inherent in a nomination or a win on a widely-watched network awards show can鈥檛 be overstated.鈥� Therefore, Mr. Tapley writes, 鈥淲hich films are most likely to pick up that aforementioned signal boost? At present, 鈥楳oonlight鈥� and 鈥楲a La Land鈥� are the best picture frontrunners.鈥澨�

Los Angeles Times writer Glenn Whipp听saw the Golden Globes nominations as the latest sign that the movie 鈥淢anchester By the Sea鈥� is also a big Oscars contender. (鈥淢anchester鈥� was nominated for best drama and director Kenneth Lonergan was nominated for best director, while actor Casey Affleck is nominated for best actor in a drama and Michelle Williams was nominated for best supporting actress.)听

All three movies receiving nods for best picture, best director, best writing, and acting are 鈥渁nother sign that these three films are the movies to beat this awards season,鈥� Mr. Whipp writes.

As for other film contenders, 鈥淟ion,鈥� 鈥淗idden Figures,鈥� 鈥淗acksaw Ridge,鈥� and 鈥淗ell or High Water鈥� are the other movies nominated for best drama, while 鈥�20th听Century Women,鈥� 鈥淔lorence Foster Jenkins,鈥� 鈥淪ing Street,鈥� and 鈥淒eadpool鈥� are the other films nominated for best comedy or musical.听

In addition to Ms. Stone, Annette Bening of 鈥�20^th Century Women,鈥� Meryl Streep of 鈥淔lorence Foster Jenkins,鈥� Hailee Steinfeld of 鈥淭he Edge of Seventeen,鈥� and Lily Collins of 鈥淩ules Don鈥檛 Apply鈥� are nominated for best actress in a comedy or musical, while 鈥淛ackie鈥� actress Natalie Portman, 鈥淎rrival鈥� actress Amy Adams, 鈥淢iss Sloane鈥� actress Jessica Chastain, 鈥淟oving鈥� actress Ruth Negga, and 鈥淓lle鈥� actress Isabelle Huppert are nominated for best actress in a drama.

Denzel Washington of 鈥淔ences,鈥� Joel Edgerton of 鈥淟oving,鈥� Andrew Garfield of 鈥淗acksaw Ridge,鈥� and Viggo Mortensen of 鈥淐aptain Fantastic鈥� are nominated for best actor in a drama alongside Affleck for 鈥淢anchester.鈥澨�

And Hugh Grant of 鈥淔lorence Foster Jenkins,鈥� Colin Farrell of 鈥淭he Lobster,鈥� Ryan Reynolds of 鈥淒eadpool,鈥� and Jonah Hill of 鈥淲ar Dogs鈥� are nominated for best actor in a comedy or musical.听

For the best supporting actress race, 鈥淔ences鈥� actress Viola Davis, 鈥淟ion鈥� actress Nicole Kidman, and 鈥淗idden Figures鈥� actress Octavia Spencer are nominated alongside Ms. Harris and Ms. Williams, while 鈥淣octurnal Animals鈥� actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, 鈥淔lorence Foster Jenkins鈥� actor Simon Helberg, 鈥淗ell or High Water鈥� actor Jeff Bridges, and 鈥淟ion鈥� actor Dev Patel are nominated for best supporting actor, in addition to Mr. Ali for 鈥淢oonlight.鈥澨�

Tom Ford of 鈥淣octurnal Animals鈥� and Mel Gibson of 鈥淗acksaw Ridge鈥� are nominated for best director alongside Mr. Chazelle, Mr. Lonergan, and Mr. Jenkins.听

The HFPA also recognizes TV at the Golden Globes, and the nominees for best drama are HBO鈥檚 鈥淕ame of Thrones鈥� and 鈥淲estworld,鈥� Netflix鈥檚 鈥淪tranger Things鈥� and 鈥淭he Crown,鈥� and NBC鈥檚 鈥淭his Is Us.鈥�

The nominees for best comedy are Amazon鈥檚 鈥淭ransparent鈥� and 鈥淢ozart in the Jungle,鈥� FX鈥檚 鈥淎tlanta,鈥� HBO鈥檚 鈥淰eep,鈥� and ABC鈥檚 鈥淏lack-ish.鈥�

The nominees for best actor in a drama are Rami Malek for 鈥淢r. Robot,鈥� Matthew Rhys for 鈥淭he Americans,鈥� Bob Odenkirk for 鈥淏etter Call Saul,鈥� Billy Bob Thornton for 鈥淕oliath,鈥� and Liev Schreiber for 鈥淩ay Donovan.鈥�

The nominees for best actress in a drama are 鈥淪tranger Things鈥� actress Winona Ryder, 鈥淭he Crown鈥� actress Claire Foy, 鈥淲estworld鈥� actress Evan Rachel Wood, 鈥淥utlander鈥� actress Caitriona Balfe, and 鈥淭he Americans鈥� actress Keri Russell.
