Will a sequel to the 1985 adventure movie 鈥淭he Goonies鈥� happen?

The director of the original film, Richard Donner, recently stated in an interview with TMZ that he is working on it 鈥� when asked by TMZ about the amount of comic book movies currently being made, he said, 鈥淚f you call 鈥楪oonies鈥� a comic book, we鈥檙e doing a sequel.鈥�

And now Donner says director Steven Spielberg, who is credited with creating the story for the original film, has come up with a new plotline for the planned sequel.

鈥淗opefully we鈥檙e going to get this done," Donner said of creating the new movie in an interview with TMZ. "[Spielberg] came up with another storyline. He's right on.鈥�

When asked if any cast members from the original film would return, he said, 鈥淚t鈥檚 up to them. If they have any sense, they will. If they don鈥檛, they won鈥檛.鈥�

Two stars of the first movie, 鈥淟ord of the Rings鈥� actor Sean Astin and Corey Feldman, have commented before on the possible film 鈥� Astin told the website IGN in 2012 that 鈥渋t will happen. I'm 1000 percent certain there will be a sequel. I will bet my children on it.鈥� Meanwhile, Feldman tweeted, 鈥淚 believe they [are] workin hard [to] make it the best script poss[ible] and if and when they feel confident [to] share w us, [you] will know!鈥�

The first film starred Astin, Feldman, 鈥淟abor Day鈥� actor Josh Brolin, and 鈥淩aising Hope鈥� actress Martha Plimpton as a group of children and teenagers who search for a treasure rumored to have been hidden by a pirate, trying to find it before a group of criminals locates it first.

Donner was also behind the 1978 film 鈥淪uperman鈥� and the four 鈥淟ethal Weapon鈥� movies as well as the 1988 holiday film 鈥淪crooged.鈥� Meanwhile, Spielberg was nominated for a Best Director Oscar in 2012 for his movie 鈥淟incoln.鈥�
