Not your pop's pop

鈥淵ou are what you like鈥 might best sum up Charly Bliss鈥檚 punky pop record Guppy. The New York City band鈥檚 influences are the very bands they stood in line to see as teens, which means 鈥90s popsters like Veruca Salt, Letters to Cleo, and Weezer. The band sound less polished but every bit as energetic and tuneful as their inspirations, and 鈥淕uppy鈥 is at once an ode to their elders and a totally modern take on pop, with plenty of vinegar to offset the bubblegum.

Jackson star as members of a team that is exploring Kong鈥檚 island in 1973 during the Vietnam War, a choice of setting that Monitor film critic Peter Rainer calls 鈥渋nspired.鈥 鈥淭hey look as if they had fun,鈥 Rainer writes of the actors involved in the movie. 鈥淪o will you.鈥
