Former Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine suggests that citizens engage with established groups that are already working for political common ground. Here are eight that she recommends.

In her book, 鈥淔ighting for Common Ground,鈥 Olympia Snowe, the former senator from Maine, writes that the 鈥渇astest way鈥 for citizens to push for compromise in Congress is to 鈥渟upport the efforts of existing national groups鈥 that advocate bipartisanship. She recommends the following eight organizations, urging people to 鈥渂rowse their websites, visit them on Facebook, and follow them on Twitter.鈥 Several of them invite direct citizen participation.

Bipartisan Policy Center聽is a think tank started by four former Republican and Democratic Senate majority leaders to research and advocate bipartisan solutions to national problems.

No Labels is a citizens鈥 movement of Republicans, Democrats, and independents that promotes 鈥渢he politics of problem solving.鈥 It has organized a bipartisan group of members of Congress to meet regularly.

Republican Main Street Partnership聽is a group of 鈥渕ain stream鈥 fiscally conservative elected leaders and others promoting 鈥減ragmatic鈥 and 鈥渃ommon sense鈥 solutions in government.

Third Way聽is a progressive think tank that focuses on the 鈥渧ital center,鈥 compromise, and moderate policy recommendations.聽

Campaign to Fix the Debt is a nonpartisan movement to put America on a better fiscal and economic path. It offers a 鈥渢ool kit鈥 for citizen action.

National Institute for Civil Discourse at the University of Arizona聽was established shortly after the 2011 shooting in Tucson. It is a research and advocacy center focused on promoting civil discourse in politics and the media.

The Village Square聽is a local, nonpartisan public education forum 鈥 not an advocacy group 鈥 that promotes fact-based discussion of local, state, and national issues and is based in Tallahassee, Fla.聽

Olympia鈥檚 List聽is a committee founded by Ms. Snowe to support candidates who believe in 鈥渂uilding consensus.鈥澛
