Chrysler recalls 840,000 vehicles. Is yours on the list?

Chrysler recalls for airbag and restraint head rests affect cars and SUVs mostly in the US. Several separate Chrysler recalls have been issued.

Chrysler聽Group LLC said on Wednesday it will聽recall聽840,000聽vehicles聽in the United States and other countries, mostly for active-restraint head rests that are possibly flawed.

Five separate recalls include nearly 500,000 cars and SUVs for the active-restaint head rest issue, and another 282,000 minivans for possible malfunctioning聽air聽bags,聽Chrysler聽said.

While聽Chrysler聽has improved its scores on third-party quality assessments such as聽Consumer Reports聽in recent years, it has issued 12 separate recalls since early June involving about 4 million聽vehicles.

This figure includes 2.7 million older聽Jeep聽models聽Chrysler聽recalled after initially resisting U.S. regulators from the聽National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. [ID: nL2N0EU1IX]

Chrysler聽is majority-owned by聽Italy's Fiat SpA, which took over management of the聽Michigan-based company in 2009.

Chrysler聽spokesman聽Eric Mayne聽said the recalls are "an indication of our聽aggressive quality-control protocol."

Chrysler聽said there have been three reported accidents and one "minor" injury as a result of the聽air聽bag issue in the minivans and that it is not aware of any injuries or accidents related to the head rest issue.

Most of the affected聽vehicles聽are in the聽United States.

Included in the recalls announced on Wednesday are about 490,000 cars and SUVs that have potentially faulty micro computer components for head rests that are designed to move forward during rear-end crashes.

This聽recall聽affects 2011-2013聽Chrysler聽Sebring,聽Chrysler聽200,聽Dodge Avenger聽and聽Jeep Liberty聽vehicles, as well as 2011-2012 Dodge Nitro SUVs.

"The potentially faulty聽microcontrollers聽were installed in a supplied component,"聽Chrysler聽said in a statement. "They entered the supply chain after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in聽Japan聽caused a worldwide microcontroller shortage."

The maker of the component was聽TRW Automotive Holdings聽Corp. , according to papers filed by聽Chrysler聽with U.S. safety regulators.

Chrysler聽will fix the聽vehicles聽by upgrading a power module or the "occupant restraint control module," the automaker said in papers filed with NHTSA.

The聽recall聽affects 442,000聽vehicles聽in the聽United States, 25,000 in聽Canada, 10,000 in聽Mexico聽and 12,000 outside North America.

Some 282,000 model year 2013 minivans in the聽United States,聽Canada,聽Mexico聽and outside聽North America聽are to be recalled because a side聽air聽bag software component was not programmed properly, which could affect proper deployment,聽Chrysler聽said. Of these, 224,250 are in the聽United States聽and 49,30 in聽Canada.

Affected models are 2013聽Dodge Caravan,聽Chrysler聽Town聽& Country and聽Ram聽Cargo Van.

In another聽recall聽announced on Wednesday,聽Chrysler聽said 69,000 of its 2013聽Ram聽1500 pickup trucks with all-wheel drive may have an聽electronic stability control聽software glitch.

Chrysler聽said it has received a "small amount" of reports from dealers that the聽electronic stability control聽lamp was illuminated, indicating that the system was disabled.

There have been no reported accidents or injuries related to this issue,聽Chrysler聽said.

In the聽Ram聽1500聽recall, about 46,000聽vehicles聽are in the聽United States, 21,000 in聽Canada, 1,400 in聽Mexico聽and 770 outside聽North America.

Two smaller recalls announced Wednesday affect 1,060 commercial vans and 226 minivans not yet in dealer hands for issues that have not led to any accidents or injuries,聽Chrysler聽said.
