This year, many of the movies nominated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences drew their inspiration from the printed page.
Of the movies nominated for Best Picture, several are based on the written word. 鈥淎merican Sniper鈥� is a film version of the book of the same name, while the movie 鈥淭he Theory of Everything鈥� came from Jane Hawking鈥檚 book 鈥淭raveling to Infinity鈥�. The film 鈥淭he Imitation Game鈥� was based on the Alan Turing biography 鈥淎lan Turing: The Enigma鈥� by Andrew Hodges.聽
The film 鈥淚nherent Vice,鈥� which was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, came from the novel of the same name by Thomas Pynchon. Best Actress nominee Julianne Moore received her nod for the movie 鈥淪till Alice,鈥� based on the book of the same name by Lisa Genova, while Rosamund Pike, another Best Actress nominee, starred in the movie 鈥淕one Girl,鈥� based on the book of the same name by Gillian Flynn. Reese Witherspoon鈥檚 nomination for the same award came for the movie 鈥淲ild,鈥� which was based on the book by Cheryl Strayed. Best Supporting Actress nominee Laura Dern was also nominated for 鈥淲ild.鈥澛�
Actress Meryl Streep received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for 鈥淚nto the Woods,鈥� which is based on the Stephen Sondheim musical of the same name, which in turn is based on multiple fairy tales.聽
For the Best Animated Feature category, the film 鈥淏ig Hero 6鈥� was adapted from a comic, while 鈥淗ow to Train Your Dragon 2鈥� was based on Cressida Cowell鈥檚 series. 鈥淭he Boxtrolls鈥� is a film adaptation of Alan Snow鈥檚 book 鈥淗ere Be Monsters!鈥澛�
The film 鈥淯nbroken,鈥� which was based on the book of the same name by Laura Hillenbrand, was nominated for cinematography and sound editing and sound mixing. Meanwhile, the film 鈥淢aleficent,鈥� taken from the 鈥淪leeping Beauty鈥� fairy tale, was nominated for costume design.聽
