鈥淎 Song of Ice and Fire鈥 author George R.R. Martin spoke out about his book series after his editor said she was 鈥渂egin[ning] to wonder鈥 if an eighth book would be necessary to conclude his series. (Martin had previously said he planned on seven.)

Martin told Entertainment Weekly that he was still planning on seven novels but that people should 鈥済et back to me when I鈥檓 halfway through Book Seven and then maybe I鈥檒l tell you something more meaningful.鈥

As he pointed out and as his editor had mentioned, Martin had originally planned to write the 鈥淔ire鈥 series as a trilogy.

鈥淢y plan is to finish in seven,鈥 Martin told EW. 鈥淏ut my original plan was to finish in three. I write the stories and they grow. I deal with certain things and sometimes I find myself not at the end of a story. My plan right now is still seven. But first I have to finish Book Six.鈥

A release date has not yet been announced for Martin鈥檚 sixth book, though Martin鈥檚 editor Anne Groell told fans, 鈥淲hen I have a date, you will have a date.鈥

The wildly popular HBO series 鈥淕ame of Thrones,鈥 which is based on Martin鈥檚 series, is currently airing its fourth season, which is based on the second half of the third book in the 鈥淔ire鈥 series.
