A Dance to the Music of Time by Anthony Powell has to be one of the best books (actually a 12-novel series) I've ever read. It offers funny, sad, withering satire, and insightful commentary on the British from just before World War I to the 1950's. I have loved the characters and the dance. Powell was a genius.
