In 2013, Detroit had the highest homicide rate in large cities – 12 times higher than in New York City. Since then, its homicide rate has dropped by 39%. So we sent our reporters to find out why.
The answer comes down to people like Pastor Barry and the people he convenes in the basement of his church, Cameron Pugh and Sara Miller Llana found. Here he offers young Black men skills workshops. He and other community members strategize about neighborhood problems and incubate ideas for micro enterprises. And it’s here that groups like FORCE Detroit, a community violence intervention group, was born.
“This is how we rebuild our communities,” Pastor Barry says. “You turn the people around by providing opportunity, bringing out their humanity, meeting them where they are, and helping them get where they need to be.”
