听has made Peter Dinklage a household name in the movie/TV geek community. Yet, in reality, the Golden Globe-winning actor 鈥 responsible for bringing sharp-witted Tyrion Lannister to life on the HBO fantasy series 鈥 has been making a name for himself for more than a decade now, between leading turns in indie fare like听The Station Agent听and scene-stealing appearances in films like听Elf听补苍诲听both听versions of听Death at a Funeral听(not to mention, his previous memorable supporting roles on TV shows like听Threshold听补苍诲听Nip/Tuck).
Paramount has acquired a comedy vehicle with Dinklage attached to star, as will be produced by Disruption Entertainment鈥檚 Cale Boyter and Mary Parent (Role Models). The original script is slated to be written by Andrew Dodge, who is fresh off making his produced screenwriting debut with听听补肠迟辞谤 Jason Bateman鈥檚 feature-length directorial debut,听Bad Words.
听听describes the project 鈥 with Dinklage lined to portray a man who goes around telling people that he is an听actual听leprechaun 鈥 as being in the vein of听, in the sense that it was pitched as being a thoroughly inappropriate raunchy comedy 鈥 one that lies听鈥渄eep in R-rated territory but wrapped around an emotional heart.鈥
The summary from听THR听indicates that the Dinklage starring vehicle lies in Dodge鈥檚 wheelhouse as a writer, seeing how听Bad Words听鈥 starring Bateman as a hyper-articulate man-child who attempts to win a national spelling bee that he lost when he was a kid (via a loophole) 鈥 has prompted comparisons to the aforementioned popular Billy Bob Thornton dark comedy. Case in point,听鈥榮 positive review asserts that Bateman鈥檚 film (and, in turn, Dodge鈥檚 screenplay)听鈥淓ssentially [does] for one of America鈥檚 great scholastic pastimes what 鈥楤ad Santa鈥 did for Christmas cheer.鈥
Dinklage鈥檚 ability to handle comedy and drama with equal adeptness is well-established, which makes him all the better choice to play the lead in this new R-Rated comedy (just call it听Bad Leprechaun, in lieu of an official title?) as someone cynical, pathetic, conniving and sympathetic all at once.
