2nd space relay satellite in rocket trouble, US says

April 29, 1983

Unresolved rocket trouble is expected to ground a second US data relay satellite in August, a space agency official said this week. A faulty rocket left the first such satellite, launched by the space shuttle Challenger, tumbling in the wrong orbit. An ingenious rescue plan has been devised to move the $100 million satellite into the proper stationary orbit. A test firing was to be tried Monday, the official said.
