Podcast: What to expect from Trump on cybersecurity

President Trump has faced criticism for failing to strongly condemn Russia for allegedly interfering in November鈥檚 election with political hacks, leaks, and fake news.聽But at least one former Obama administration official thinks there's reason for hope when it comes to the Trump administration's policy to tackle digital security.聽
Former White House Homeland Security Adviser Lisa Monaco says she's encouraged by the leaked draft cybersecurity executive order that circulated in the press last month, and has spent hours on the phone with her successor in the Trump White House to ensure a smooth transition. But she cautions that the US strategy over the last few years to "impose costs" on hackers 鈥 which has included using attribution and strong public statements to call out hackers and even sanctioning bad actors 鈥 must continue during the Trump administration.
"We need to continue to hold those bad actors accountable otherwise we don't have a hope of deterring that behavior," Ms. Monaco said.聽
This extra episode of the Cybersecurity Podcast features highlights from an event Passcode cohosted with cybersecurity company Invincea at the RSA Conference in San Francisco last month. There, Monaco spoke along with聽former US Chief Information Security Officer Greg Touhill, General Motors鈥 Jeffrey Massimilla, US Deputy Assistant Attorney General Adam Hickey and聽Rich Barger, director for security research at Splunk.聽
