The assassination bombing came amid several days of fighting within Damascus 鈥� the first sustained rebel campaign in the heart of the capital city. While recent reports put government forces back in control of the Midan neighborhood in the central part of the city, the violence in Damascus, the seat of the Assad鈥檚 power, suggests that his regime鈥檚 power is waning. At the very least, it will sow doubts about the government鈥檚 capacity.
"The capital used to be safe,鈥� activist Mustafa Osso told the Associated Press earlier this week. 鈥淭his will trouble the regime."
