US Sen. John Kerry (l.) met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak at the presidential palace in Cairo, Egypt, Dec. 14, 2006.

Sunni-majority, Sunni-controlled Egypt struggled between concern about Iran鈥檚 nuclear program and concern about how the world's most-populous Arab nation would react if they found out their government was seeking to halt Iran鈥檚 ascendancy. According to cables released Sunday, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak told US Sen. John Kerry (D) of Massachusetts that Iran was a known state sponsor of terrorism and that he backed the idea of sanctions. However, 鈥淚 cannot say it publicly.
