A long walk to a Tibetan school

Reporters on the Job: When I first visited the 鈥淏aby Room鈥 at the Tibetan Children鈥檚 Village (read the story here), I assumed that the dozens of toddlers I saw in the nursery were orphans.

I was surprised to learn that many of them were brought or sent by their parents in Tibet to India to get a Tibetan education even if it meant breaking up the family.

It was hard to comprehend that these small children had trekked on foot or were carried over the Himalayas just so they could go to school. It鈥檚 a big risk for the children and their parents and serves as testament to the alternative on the other side of the border.
