Some of the sharpest declines in press freedom occurred in the America's region, a region that includes poor performers such as Venezuela and Cuba, but otherwise contains many elected democracies. Two countries that saw their ratings drop from 鈥淔ree鈥 to 鈥淧artly Free鈥 were Chile and Guyana, because of threats to journalists and restrictions on covering protests. Mexico, which fell to 鈥淣ot Free鈥 status in 2010 because of instability and the murder of journalists, remains one of the most dangerous countries for journalists.
