In 1979, an underwater oil well blew out in the Gulf of Mexico near the Yucat谩n Peninsula. Oil gushed out for 10 months. Four months in, more than half of Texas鈥檚 370-mile Gulf shoreline was covered in oil. In the end, 140 million gallons of oil spilled into the Gulf.
