Inside St. George's Chapel, Britain's Prince Andrew stands during the funeral of Prince Philip in Windsor, England, April 17, 2021. Known Jeffery Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre filed a lawsuit against Prince Andrew saying he sexually assaulted her when she was 17.

One of Jeffrey Epstein鈥檚 longtime accusers sued Prince Andrew on Monday, taking accusations that she has repeatedly publicly lodged against him, including that聽he sexually assaulted her聽when she was 17, to a formal venue.

Lawyers for Virginia Giuffre filed the lawsuit in Manhattan federal court, where Mr. Epstein was charged criminally with sex trafficking a month before he killed himself at age 66 in August 2019 in an adjacent federal jail where he was ordered to await trial.

Ms. Giuffre has repeatedly made her allegations against Mr. Epstein, his onetime girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell, and Prince Andrew, but the lawsuit was the first time she has directly confronted Prince Andrew in such a formal setting. It steps up public relations pressure on the prince, even if he remains beyond the reach of the courts.

In a statement, Ms. Giuffre said she was 鈥渉olding Prince Andrew accountable for what he did to me.鈥

鈥淭he powerful and rich are not exempt from being held responsible for their actions. I hope that other victims will see that it is possible not to live in silence and fear, but to reclaim one鈥檚 life by speaking out and demanding justice,鈥 Ms. Giuffre said.

鈥淚 did not come to this decision lightly,鈥 she added. 鈥淎s a mother and a wife, my family comes first聽鈥 and I know that this action will subject me to further attacks by Prince Andrew and his surrogates 鈥 but I knew if I did not pursue this action, I would be letting them and victims everywhere down.鈥

In late 2019, Prince Andrew told BBC Newsnight that he never had sex with Ms. Giuffre, saying, 鈥淚t didn鈥檛 happen.鈥

He said he has 鈥渘o recollection鈥 of ever meeting her and told an interviewer there are 鈥渁 number of things that are wrong鈥 about Ms. Giuffre鈥檚 account, which alleges the encounter occurred in 2001.

鈥淚 can absolutely categorically tell you it never happened,鈥 Prince Andrew said.

The interview was widely panned by critics who said Prince Andrew seemed insensitive to Mr. Epstein鈥檚 victims. Afterward, the prince quit royal duties.

Ms. Giuffre has long said Ms. Maxwell recruited her at age 17 to be sexually abused by Mr. Epstein and Ms. Maxwell from 1999 to 2002.

According to the lawsuit, which sought unspecified compensatory and punitive damages, the prince abused Ms. Giuffre on multiple occasions when she was under the age of 18.

During each of the alleged acts, Ms. Giuffre was given 鈥渆xpress or implied threats鈥 by Mr. Epstein, Ms. Maxwell, and/or Prince Andrew to engage in sexual acts with the prince, the lawsuit said.

It said that she 鈥渇eared death or physical injury to herself or another and other repercussions for disobeying鈥 the trio because of their 鈥減owerful connections, wealth, and authority.鈥

The lawsuit details three occasions whe the prince sexually abused, including in Ms. Maxwell鈥檚 London home,聽in Mr. Epstein鈥檚 New York mansion and聽on Mr. Epstein鈥檚 private island in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Prince Andrew knew her age at the time based on communications with Mr. Epstein and Ms. Maxwell, the lawsuit added.聽

The lawsuit was brought under the Child Victims Act, a 2019 New York state law that allows victims to temporarily make legal claims of abuse that occurred when they were children regardless of when or how long ago the alleged abuse occurred.

Ms. Maxwell has pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking charges in Manhattan federal court, where she faces trial in November. She is held without bail. Her lawyers did not respond to requests for comment.

As part of a continuing probe into Mr. Epstein and his encounters with women and teenage girls, Manhattan federal prosecutors last year formally requested to speak with Prince Andrew.

The request, similar to issuing a subpoena, was made under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty, an agreement between the two countries to share evidence and information in criminal cases. United States prosecutors reportedly made a formal request through the British government to interview Prince Andrew.

Brad Edwards, a lawyer who represents dozens of Epstein victims, has said that the prince has failed to answer questions for civil lawsuits before.

鈥淚鈥檝e always been given the impression that, whether he has immunity or not, he certainly behaves like he does,鈥 Mr. Edwards said.
