鈥淲hiz-bang,鈥� 鈥減ipsqueak,鈥� 鈥渃ushy.鈥� All are words popularized in World War I. Every war produces its own lexicon. But World War I was particularly fecund. Some of the words stemmed from the new era of mechanized weaponry, which required their own descriptions 鈥� thus small German guns were 鈥減ipsqueaks,鈥� incoming rounds went 鈥渨hiz-bang,鈥� and certain artillery were 鈥渂ig berthas.鈥� Unappetizing canned beef was 鈥渕onkey meat,鈥� the patriotic Allied term for sauerkraut was 鈥渓iberty cabbage,鈥� and sausage and mashed potatoes were 鈥渮eppelins in a cloud.鈥� There was 鈥渢rench foot,鈥� 鈥渟hell shock,鈥� 鈥渇leabags鈥� (bedrolls), and everything 鈥渆rsatz鈥� (substitute German foods).
