Here are some of the things that changed as a result of the First World War.

4. Words

鈥淲hiz-bang,鈥 鈥減ipsqueak,鈥 鈥渃ushy.鈥 All are words popularized in World War I. Every war produces its own lexicon. But World War I was particularly fecund. Some of the words stemmed from the new era of mechanized weaponry, which required their own descriptions 鈥 thus small German guns were 鈥減ipsqueaks,鈥 incoming rounds went 鈥渨hiz-bang,鈥 and certain artillery were 鈥渂ig berthas.鈥 Unappetizing canned beef was 鈥渕onkey meat,鈥 the patriotic Allied term for sauerkraut was 鈥渓iberty cabbage,鈥 and sausage and mashed potatoes were 鈥渮eppelins in a cloud.鈥 There was 鈥渢rench foot,鈥 鈥渟hell shock,鈥 鈥渇leabags鈥 (bedrolls), and everything 鈥渆rsatz鈥 (substitute German foods).
