Lena Dunham and Hillary Clinton: 'Girls' helping girls

Lena Dunham traveled through Iowa with humor and conviction Saturday, telling the state's early caucus voters why former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has her vote.聽
鈥淣othing gets me angrier than when people say I鈥檓 voting for Hillary Clinton ,鈥 Dunham said at her first event Saturday. 鈥淸It鈥檚] as if I have some feminist version of beer-goggles, lets call it 鈥榚strogen blindness,鈥 and I kind of walk like a zombie towards the nearest [woman]. This assumption is condescending at best and it is sharply misogynisitic at worst.鈥澛
But as a self-proclaimed feminist, Dunham told audiences that she thinks a female commander-in-chief is what the country needs.
鈥淲hile Hillary Clinton鈥檚 I鈥檓 voting for her, there鈥檚 nothing that would send a stronger message to this country, and to the world at large than sending a competent, strong, essential woman to the highest office.鈥澛
And as Dunham鈥檚 unapologetic and candid comments in a "HILLARY" dress suggest, the HBO actress may serve as an antidote for Clinton鈥檚 politically correct, pantsuit-wearing personality.聽
鈥淟ena can say things that Hillary wants to say but can鈥檛,鈥 one audience member told Time.聽
Dunham has become 鈥渁 crucial ambassador for the Democratic presidential candidate as among millennial women,鈥 writes The New York Times.聽
Clinton could use Dunham鈥檚 pull on the Millennial front, as she is currently losing this demographic to her Democratic competitor Sen. Bernie Sanders from Vermont.聽
In an October survey by NBC News, only 26 percent of Millennials supported Clinton which is far less than . And a November survey of 18 to 29-year-olds by Harvard University鈥檚 Institute of Politics found that 35 percent of Democratic primary voters favored Clinton, compared to .
And both candidates know they can鈥檛 underestimate the power of the Millennial vote: It could represent 36 percent of eligible voters in the 2016 presidential election.聽
The competitive Democratic race has invited celebrity endorsements on both sides. Besides Dunham, some of Clinton鈥檚 supporters include singers Katy Perry, Beyonce, and Snoop Dogg as well as actresses Olivia Wilde, Kerry Washington, and Jennifer Lopez. Sanders has less but still notable celebrity supporters including musician Dave Matthews, comedian Will Ferrell, and MMA fighter Ronda Rousey.聽
As both Sanders and Clinton try to win over millennials, young voters may agree with Dunham鈥檚 "it鈥檚 not about gender" argument 鈥 even if it actually ends up helping Sanders.
鈥淚t would be cool to have a woman president, ,鈥 Maggie Mineart, 26, told the Guardian after Dunham鈥檚 speech in Iowa. 鈥淚f I wanted to just vote for a woman, I could vote for Carly Fiorina too, but I鈥檓 not.鈥澛
And Ashley O鈥橪eary, 24, told Time after Dunham鈥檚 speech that celebrity endorsements and gender don鈥檛 impact her political beliefs.
鈥淲hen you take all the celebrity away, and I think he鈥檚 with the people more than she is鈥 says O鈥橪eary. She wants a fellow female president, but gender doesn鈥檛 usurp policy. 鈥淚t would be a huge milestone. But it needs to be the right woman to take that spot. I don鈥檛 know if this is our time.鈥
