Hillary launches first campaign ads: Why is her mother the star?

Hillary Clinton has released the first two television ads for her presidential campaign, and her mother, Dorothy, plays a prominent role in both.

Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton has released the first two television ads of her 2016 presidential campaign, and they both feature her late mother, Dorothy Rodham.听

The one-minute ads, titled and will begin broadcasting in Iowa and New Hampshire on Tuesday and continue to air over the course of five weeks.听

In 鈥淒orothy,鈥 Mrs. Clinton narrates the story of her mother鈥檚 childhood over old black and white photos of Mrs. Rodham, who passed away at 92 in 2011.听

鈥淲hen I think about why I鈥檓 doing this, I think about my mother, Dorothy,鈥 Clinton begins. She goes on to explain that her mother was abandoned and sent to live with her grandparents 鈥渨ho didn鈥檛 want her鈥 at the age of eight, but got by through the small kindnesses of teachers and the family whose house she cleaned.听

鈥淚 think about all the Dorothys all over America who fight for their families, who never give up. That鈥檚 why I鈥檓 doing this,鈥 Clinton concludes. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 why I鈥檝e always done this. For all the Dorothys.鈥澛

Mrs. Rodham is also featured in 鈥淔amily Strong,鈥 which opens with her story but then expands to include more of Clinton鈥檚 credentials and photos of her granddaughter, Charlotte Clinton Mezvinsky.听

Dorothy Rodham has been a prominent figure in Clinton鈥檚 campaign since her launch rally in June, where the former Secretary of State , declaring, 鈥淢y mother taught me that everybody needs a chance and a champion.鈥 聽

She later referred to a single mother she had met recently who was struggling to raise three children and attend community college, saying, 鈥淚 want to be her champion and your champion.鈥

鈥淲e鈥檙e going to make sure everyone knows who Hillary Clinton really is 鈥 who she fights for and what has motivated her lifelong commitment to children and families,鈥 campaign manager Robby Mook in a statement released Sunday evening.

The 鈥渢ough-mother pitch鈥 makes sense for Clinton, writes columnist John Dickerson, because it paints her as a 鈥渟crappy fighter鈥 and 鈥渆stablishes her genuine roots, which shows voters she is not distant from their concerns despite her newfound wealth.鈥澛

A more personal re-branding of Clinton鈥檚 image may be necessary, as a recent showed that 57% of Americans don鈥檛 find her honest and trustworthy, including 87% of Republicans and 61% of independents.

鈥淗er campaign's response has been: Let's change the subject,鈥 writes Doyle McManus for the .听

The question of trust is 鈥渢he wrong question to focus on,鈥 Clinton aide Jennifer Palmieri said in an interview with McManus. 鈥淭he real question is: Do you believe she's going to fight for you? Her whole campaign is focused on proving that, and we do well on that question.鈥
