The South Korean seemed poised to become the first golfer of either gender to win a calendar Grand Slam in the modern era, by winning four major championships. She secured wins in the year鈥檚 first three majors 鈥 the Kraft Nabisco Championship, LPGA Championship, and US Women鈥檚 Open 鈥 and entered the Women鈥檚 British Open at St. Andrews, Scotland, as the favorite. But she never found her 鈥淎鈥 game in the blustery conditions and finished well off the lead.
Still, she could win a fourth Slam tournament because this year the LPGA has designated the Evian Championship in France as a fifth major. Whether a victory in that event, held Sept. 12-15, would really be viewed as completing a Grand Slam is questionable, but at least it would merit an asterisk in the record books.
