Golf鈥檚 13 greatest achievements: Let the debate begin

8. Annika鈥檚 Sorenstam鈥檚 back-to-back 2001 and 2002 seasons

ROBERT HARBISON/THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR
Annika Sorenstam competes in the LPGA Takefuji Classic at the Las Vegas Country Club in 2003.

The talented Swede didn鈥檛 monopolize the major championships in these years, but she did win the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the first major of the year, both in 2001 and 2002. Beyond that, however, she was constantly at or near the top of the leader board and registered lots of birdies and subpar rounds.

Sorenstam won eight tournaments in 2001, when she became the first tour player with $2 million in season earnings, and 11 more in 2002. During this stretch she also broke or tied 50 LPGA records, shot a 59 for 18 holes, and captured back-to-back Vare Trophies (for having the year鈥檚 lowest scoring average) and Player of the Year honors.
