College football 2012: Who are the favorites to win it all?

Labor Day weekend marks the start of the chase for a national championship: Which teams are picked to meet for the title next January?

The arrival of Labor Day weekend marks the beginning of the 2012 college football season, where 120 colleges and universities will try to reach the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision national championship game Jan. 7, 2013 in Florida.

Any number of publications and websites have made their choice for the preseason No. 1 team in the nation. The poll has the University of Southern California at the top of their list. The Trojans feature senior quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate , who's expected to lead a high-powered offense. USC begins the season with a Saturday night in Los Angeles.

Louisiana State University, out of the Southeastern Conference, is atop the list, going into the first weekend of the 2012 season. The Tigers have experienced players returning on both offense and defense and should handle Saturday night in their home opener, despite the interruption in game preparation this week provided by Hurricane Isaac.

Coming off a national championship last season, the University of Alabama is expected to contend once again in 2012. Both have the Crimson Tide at No. 2. Alabama, under head coach Nick Saban, kicks off its new season Saturday night against at Cowboys Stadium in Texas. The game will be televised nationally on ABC, beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

Other schools that should be in the national championship picture throughout the fall include Oklahoma and Oregon. The Sooners and Ducks are the in the country by both the AP and USA Today.

Oklahoma is led by another Heisman candidate, quarterback , who has thrown for over 4,000 yards each of the past two seasons. The Sooners will play at Saturday night.

, another high-octane offensive team, has running backs Kenjon Barner and De'Anthony Thomas returning in prominent roles, but true freshman Marcus Mariota starting at quarterback. will provide the opposition in the Ducks' season home opener Saturday evening.
