Erica Garner stars in a new four-minute campaign ad for Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, in an effort to spread Sanders's millennial success across all races.

Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders released Thursday featuring civil rights activist Erica Garner.聽

Erica鈥檚 father, Eric Garner, was an unarmed African American man who died in 2014 after a white New York City police officer placed him in a chokehold. Mr. Garner repeated "I can鈥檛 breathe" 11 times, but the officers鈥 force continued unabated. Video of Garner鈥檚 death went viral, inspiring Black Lives Matter activists across the country.

鈥淭here鈥檚 no other person that鈥檚 speaking about this,鈥 Erica says in the ad, referencing police brutality and racial injustice. 鈥淲e need a president that鈥檚 going to talk about it.鈥

Eric Garner鈥檚 mother, Gwen Carr, had different political views from her granddaughter Erica, publicly endorsing Hillary Clinton for president last month.聽

鈥淗illary seems to be the only candidate right now who鈥檚 talking about how we can be strategic in trying to solve this problem,鈥 Carr writes. 鈥淲ith all the violence and injustice that鈥檚 upon us today, we need a candidate who can move us forward 鈥 .鈥澛

Trayvon Martin鈥檚 mother Sybrina Fulton, Jordan Davis鈥檚 mother Lucia McBath, and Sandra Bland鈥檚 mother Geneva Reed-Vail have also publicly supported Mrs. Clinton.聽

These are individuals, of course, and can't speak for the entire US African American demographic. But their differing political endorsements speak to a greater generational divide among black Democratic voters. While African American millennials are flocking to Sanders like their white, Asian, and Hispanic peers, the baby boomers identify more with Hillary.聽

鈥淚f I asked a Republican candidate about Black Lives Matter, they wouldn鈥檛 care,鈥 Justin Sewell, a black college student who attended Sanders鈥檚 rally in South Carolina, told the Washington Post. 鈥淚f I asked Hillary, she鈥檇 just say what鈥檚 convenient. I believe [Sanders] really cares.鈥澛

Young black voters in South Carolina told NPR they looked into Clinton鈥檚 record and they don鈥檛 like what they saw. The lack of minority advocacy 鈥,鈥 said one student. They find Sander鈥檚 past, including his work as a civil rights activist in the 1960s and 1970s, more inspiring. 聽聽

And inspiring young voters is what both Sanders and Clinton aim to do.聽

In Iowa, caucus voters between 17 and 29 years old chose Sanders by the landslide margin of 84 percent to 16 percent.

But those were mostly white millenials.聽

鈥淚n New Hampshire, where Sanders handily defeated Clinton, and Iowa where Clinton won with a razor-thin margin, electorates were more than 90 percent white,鈥 海角大神鈥檚 Husna Haq noted on Thursday.聽

Ms. Garner's appearance in Sanders鈥檚 "It鈥檚 Not Over" ad comes before the South Carolina primary, where the black Democratic vote 鈥 and crucially, the black millennial Democratic vote - will be put to the test.聽

Of all African American voters eligible for the 2016 election, while 29 percent are baby boomers. The white electorate is divided 27 and 34 percent respectively.

White millennials made an enormous difference to Sanders鈥檚 campaign in Iowa and New Hampshire, but the black millennial vote in South Carolina could be just as 鈥 if not more 鈥 important in a state with a 28 percent African American population.聽

The "It鈥檚 Not Over" ad timing isn't just about the primary. Federal prosecutors began presenting evidence on Eric Garner鈥檚 death to a grand jury Wednesday.聽

鈥淚 don鈥檛 want the world to forget what happened to my dad,鈥 says an emotional Erica Garner in the ad. 鈥淚 believe Bernie Sanders is a protester. He鈥檚 not scared to go up against the criminal justice system. He鈥檚 not scared.鈥澛
