There was a certain wistfulness to President Obama鈥檚 eighth and final appearance on the "Late Show with David Letterman." Perhaps it鈥檚 because both men, both a bit grayer over the years, are on the runway toward retirement.

Mr. Letterman鈥檚 last show, after 33 years as a late night TV host, is May 20. Mr. Obama has 20 months left as president, but as the race to replace him gears up, he is increasingly seen as a lame duck. Inevitably, the talk turned to post-retirement plans.

鈥淲ell, I was thinking you and me, we could play some dominoes together,鈥� Obama told Letterman Monday. 鈥淲e can, you know, go to the local Starbucks and swap stories.鈥�

Obama, in fact, will be a pretty young ex-president, and Letterman marveled at his immediate plan upon leaving office: to take a month off.

鈥淎re you kidding me, after eight years of this you鈥檙e only taking a month off?鈥� Letterman said.

Obama replied that he and his wife, Michelle, plan to stay involved in issues 鈥� helping young people find opportunity, helping military families, 鈥渋ssues like climate change, which are generational challenges.鈥� He also encourages young people to get involved in politics.

But 鈥淚 really like the idea of playing dominoes with you,鈥� Obama said.

鈥淚 know you think I鈥檓 no good at dominoes 鈥� but I鈥檓 pretty good at dominoes. And I plan to teach law at Columbia,鈥� Letterman deadpanned. 聽

鈥淭hat鈥檚 good,鈥� Obama, the former law professor, laughed. 鈥淚鈥檇 be interested in sitting in on that class. That would be a hoot.鈥�

Despite moments of levity, most of Obama鈥檚 appearance centered on serious issues 鈥� about the violence in Baltimore and other cities, free trade, racism, and the Obama project that seems especially near to his heart, My Brother鈥檚 Keeper. Earlier in the day, Obama had unveiled a new private-sector nonprofit, the My Brother鈥檚 Keeper Alliance, which will work to support boys and young men of color in leading productive lives.

My Brother鈥檚 Keeper seems destined to be a major focus of Obama鈥檚 post-presidency. When he spoke at a roundtable discussion on the initiative Monday afternoon at Lehman College, then in public remarks, Obama spoke in unusually personal terms 鈥� as he has done in the past when speaking of the challenges faced by minority youth.

He spoke of growing up without a dad and feeling lost, and how he was given second and third chances when some young men today aren鈥檛 afforded that opportunity. Through education and mentoring, My Brother鈥檚 Keeper aims to break the school-to-prison pipeline endemic to some urban areas. 聽

鈥淭his will remain a mission for me and for Michelle not just for the rest of my presidency, but for the rest of my life,鈥� Obama said at Lehman College in the Bronx.

Obama went straight from that speech to the Letterman taping at the Ed Sullivan Theater in Manhattan, and so the post-presidency talk perhaps wasn鈥檛 driven solely by Letterman鈥檚 own impending retirement.

But even as both men expressed mutual admiration in the president鈥檚 final appearance on the show, they also kept the quips coming.

鈥淟et me ask you, is this the first country you've presidented?鈥� Letterman asked, a reprise of No. 9 on his Top 10 List, 鈥淨uestions Dumb Guys Ask the President.鈥�

鈥淚t is, I suspect, the first and last country I'm presidenting,鈥� Obama replied. 鈥淯nlike late night talk-show hosts, I'm term limited.鈥�

Letterman also praised Obama鈥檚 comedic skill, on display at the recent White House Correspondents鈥� Dinner.

鈥淚鈥檓 a pretty funny guy, because I love watching you,鈥� Obama said.

鈥淒o you have guys write that stuff?鈥� Letterman asked.

Obama paused and smiled: 鈥淣o. I came up with all that stuff.鈥�

In case you鈥檙e not sure, that was a joke. Every year, a team of writers come up with the president鈥檚 annual correspondents鈥� dinner speech, often funnier than the actual comedian hired to perform at the event.
