Tax confusion

Rahm Emanuel is handed a tax document at the hearing.

For: Mr. Emanuel鈥檚 legal team produced a litany of documents 鈥 property tax records, driver license, voting records, water bills 鈥 that they say confirm he never intended to permanently resettle in Washington, D.C., but always meant to return to Chicago once his stint as White House Chief of Staff came to an end. A tax analyst testifying on Emanuel鈥檚 behalf said his paperwork was valid and Emanuel was officially 鈥渄omiciled鈥 in Illinois under state law.

Against: Opponents say Emanuel listed his residency status as 鈥減art-time鈥 on his 2009 state income tax return. Emanuel said Tuesday it was a mistake even though he signed the document.
