DARPA officials estimate that only 1 to 5 percent of the 鈥渟urface鈥� Internet is seen by most people. But criminal syndicates 鈥� such as human traffickers 鈥� operate in the 鈥渄ark net,鈥� which is any part of the Web not indexed by commercial services.
Now DARPA is developing 鈥渢he next generation of search technologies,鈥� called Memex, to 鈥渞evolutionize鈥� search engines.
DARPA plans to use Memex to fight human trafficking, which uses hidden services to attract customers and enables 鈥渁 growing industry of modern slavery,鈥� DARPA officials say. Fundamentally changing the way search engines work, they add, would help defeat the traffickers.
