At the end of an August Republican presidential debate, Cain said: 鈥淎 poet once said, 鈥楲ife can be a challenge, life can seem impossible, but it鈥檚 never easy when there鈥檚 so much on the line.鈥 鈥
Sure, the line doesn鈥檛 sound all that strange, but the actual source of it may. It turns out the quote isn鈥檛 some stanza ripped from a well-known poet, but rather a lyric from disco queen Donna Summer鈥檚 2000 song, 鈥淭he Power of One,鈥 which is also the theme song for the Japanese animated film, 鈥笔辞办茅尘辞苍: The Movie 2000.鈥
And this wasn鈥檛 the first time Cain quoted and incorrectly sourced the song lyrics. He actually made the same mistake in his official campaign announcement in May and again at the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans in mid-June.
Elaborating on this elusive poet, Cain has often attributed the lyrics to the closing song of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.
