The Loon at Shackford Head

A poem.

The Loon at Shackford Head

In the cove below where I stand,
听the ghost of sea-smoke
听beneath a cold sky, icy underfoot,
听then I see the loon, at first
听motionless, a petroglyph,
听before it turns to face the north
听and I see its foreneck, a pillar
听of the purest salt, as it fills
听the bay with a single glacial call.
